Galvanized Finish

One common option that you’ll find for fasteners is galvanized steel. This refers to a coating that gets applied to the surface of the steel to help it resist corrosion.

Steel is already naturally corrosion resistant, but the galvanized finish adds an extra layer of protection–especially when used in harsh environments. As a result, galvanized steel tends to be even stronger than stainless steel.

Because of this, galvanized steel fasteners are commonly utilized on outdoor projects or heavy-duty construction. Any structures like fences or railings that are exposed to water frequently can benefit from galvanized fasteners because corrosion is more common in these conditions.

Plus, the Department of Transportation tends to use a lot of galvanized steel fasteners on signposts and road signs given their long-term exposure to the elements.

Black Oxide Finish

Another common finish you’ll find for fasteners is a black oxide finish. Black oxide is a conversion coating that gets applied to the surface of both alloy steel and stainless steel. Through the oxidation process, the outer layer of the stainless steel is chemically converted to black magnetite.

While galvanized steel tends to be utilized solely for practical and functional purposes, a black oxide finish on fasteners also adds aesthetic benefits. Not to mention, a black oxide finish makes the fasteners stain resistant and less susceptible to corrosion and abrasion.

So although the black oxide finish offers an appealing appearance, these fasteners still carry all the incredible functional benefits you need from steel nuts and bolts.

You will commonly find this finish available on fasteners utilized on machines, automobiles, and more. This is because the black oxide finish that’s added is so thin that it doesn’t alter the dimensions of the fastener. So, these can be utilized in machinery where precision is required for proper performance, but you still want a certain aesthetic.

Plain Finish

As the name might suggest, a plain finish on fasteners means that there has been no extra finish added to the item. The metal surface is bare, meaning it has the corrosion resistance that the metal has naturally and no added protection.

The plain finish on fasteners like nuts and bolts is commonly used for bulk purchases and used in production. Plain finish fasteners can be used indoors or outdoors. However, they are typically utilized in structures or areas where corrosion is not a concern since they do not carry an extra layer of protection like other types of finishes.

Zinc

Meanwhile, black zinc is commonly specified for its protective properties and distinctive dark aesthetic.

Yellow zinc coatings are named for their electro-plating process, resulting in a beautiful golden color. These fasteners with yellow zinc coating are particularly well-suited for situations where the product may encounter water or other liquids.
